The District Department of Transportation has halted pedestrian-based enhancements to Connecticut Avenue NW, an organizer of the group pushing for the improvements said.
“Everything was ready to go and was stopped in its tracks because … it is not a priority,” to DDOT, Marlene Berlin, organizer of Connecticut Avenue Pedestrian Action, said in a Tuesday email to CAPA volunteers and supporters, Greater Greater Washington reports.
But in a later update to its Wednesday post, GGW quotes DDOT spokesman John Lisle saying that “there’s no indication we’ve halted anything.”
After CAPA commissioned a report proposing safety improvements between Calvert Street NW and Chevy Chase Circle NW, DDOT said it’d make funding available for leading pedestrian intervals at 12 intersections in Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Van Ness and Chevy Chase, GGW said. LPIs give pedestrians a head start at controlled intersections.
CAPA has also pushed DDOT to install a new pedestrian crossing between Ordway and Macomb streets.
Now we’ve had to await a pedestrian death to get any action! Now they have decided it’s time to do something like a “safety survey” – AFTER someone is slaughtered on our Avenue! That sucks!
